Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (United Kingdom)
We've had to make some priority juggling and the Quotes module seems to be the least missed, so we have moved it to the back of the queue (ie. expect it in a month or two).

If nobody responds to this it's assume that this is ok?

Thanks
Rodney

Just a quick note: We have release Quotes for DNN 3.x as we used it to demo the Smart-Thinker DataGrid control and it was so near completion.

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (N/A)
I have subscribed especially for the Quotes module.
I am using it on a site that shows Quotes, Saying, Jokes etc.

The most critical update I need is the use of FTB in the module
The other improvments I would like to see is categories - for example Quote,Saying,Joke etc.
A simpler way for the end user to ad a new quote. (Like a special form module)
And various ways to show the quotes - the user can choose categories, page between the quotes, search on them etc.

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (United Kingdom)
Hi Lior

Ok - I will put this in as a top priotiry for the next version - it is a long way away unfortunately - working on too many modules and got too much other stuff on the go at the moment - haven't had much time to concentrate on the modules lately!

I'll need to think about categories - I like the idea of branching it into some thing that could handle jokes/stories etc. so that is a good idea. What do you mean by a simpler way for an end user to add a quote? It can't get much simpler can it? Or do you mean scaled down depending on category?

Your last ideas on the list but this is really far away I'm afraid - there is not much demand for this module but loads for the Events and UserProfile.

I can give you the source if it is urgent and you need to make changes?

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (N/A)
Hi
Regarding the categories and integration of FTB I don't know how to do it even if I have the source so I will have to wait for you.
Regarding a simpler way to add a quote -
I would like to see the form that adds a new quote on a seperate page - the user enters a page and see this forum, without the need to look for the link underneath the module or go for it threw the drop down menu.
But as I said this is less urgent then the FTB support which is the most important because I add stuff to the site but the formatting is lost.
Categories is very important to my kind of site as well and I will love it if you will add this feature.

I do need the source for minor tweaks I have and localization issues.
Please send me the source to inetinf at yahoo dot com.

Regards

Lior

Hi Lior

Ok - you can download the source on the Quotes Member page (I have added you as a Special Subscriber) - it is not 100% commented and refactored (hence I was going to release it for the next version).

I will try to do a quick release sometime with the FTB change as this is a quick change with good return.

Thanks

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (Israel)
Hi
I have some problems with the module :

1. It shows all the time the same quote, even though there are lots of quotes enterd :
http://www.pitgamim.co.il/Default.aspx?tabid=84
You need to login to see the qutes. I had to force login, because that adding a quote without Login, has thrown an error.

2. When pressing the name of the contributer of the quote, there is an error.

3.What about the new features of the quotes module ? When will you release them ?

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (United Kingdom)
Hi Lior

Isn't that strange, I was working on the new Quotes version and was about to email you to see if you had any other ideas while I was at it!

1) What setting do you have the Get Next Quote set to? Random or Least Shown?
Have you integrated the module with the Smart-Thinker User Profile module? (ie. does it take User Censorship into account? WRT logging in, this is as the module was designed - it stores information about the user so it can integrate with User Profiles. I'll make a note of this for the next version (Allow anonymous users to submit quotes).

2) What is the error? If you click on the name it will link to their user profile if it has been setup and you have configured the module to integrate with the User Profile module.

3) I am working on a quick release, and should hopefully release it this weekend. The features I have time for are:

  •     FTB editor for the main quote text
  •     The ability to select a specific quote - eg. for the front page or a testimonial
  •     If the Submitted By person is different to the Said By person then their name will also appear
I can't promise, but if you have any small changes I can maybe get them in - I can't make any architectural changes for this version as I have committed to starting on the next version of the Events module ASAP.

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (Israel)
Hi
The link to the UserProfile works for some ID's but not for others.
For example : http://www.pitgamim.co.il/Default.aspx?tabid=103&ID=7 works, but http://www.pitgamim.co.il/Default.aspx?tabid=103&ID=6 doesn't.

by pressing the liorlustig liorlustig user, it goes to ID 6 and shows an error. If I change the ID number to 7 it works.

Regarding features, the most important one after FTB is anonimus adding of quotes, and categories with the ability for the user to offer a new category (other) or choose from a pre exisitng categories. In that way I can also show in a grid from the DB table all the quotes of a specific category - jokes, saying etc, and add much more functionality by my self.
This feature is critical, because that after users are adding quotes it won't be possible to use that data because there is no category, so if this feature qill be added in a much later time, all the qutoes that been enterd would be useless. It also helps the data be more structured, and makes the quotes module to a much more appealing module - not only quotes, so users can use it for any kind of data enterd by users that they want.
I also want to show in a grid the most shows quotes - it could have been nice if the user could vote for a quote so I can make some sort of a competition for entering good quotes, and show a grid from the DB with the best quotes.

I added the ability for a user to add a qutoe on a seperate page by using this link :
http://www.pitgamim.co.il/Default.aspx?tabid=84&ctl=Edit&mid=408 ,
so it's easier now to find it becuase it's in the menu.

Searching on quotes and paging them can be made using a Grid module, so you can wait with these features.

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (United Kingdom)
Hmm - can you send me the full error message from the Log Viewer for the user profile issue? Does the User with the UserID of 6 have a profile setup (I noticed 7 says that they don't (as you would expect) so it may be falling over with something in the profile. Have you got the profiles working with anything else - eg. if you setup a profile for a user and change the UserID param to that UserID does it work?

Features: Ok - you have persuaded me ;)  I like the idea of Categories and it makes sense and makes the module far more useable. I will add the ability to specify categories - which ones should I ship as default? (can be extended using Lists) - Quote, Testimonial, Joke, Thought of the Day?

Considering this was supposed to be a quick version that is all I will do for this one - the NEXT version will have more filters etc. around the categories - eg. show only Jokes etc, but that will have to wait. Your other ideas are good (including anonymous editing) but will also have to wait because there is very little demand for this module (although perhaps these changes will make it more popular). One of the major changes I want to implement is templating, so you can design the UI for it.

I'm going to start a thread on the main site to see if anyone has any other SMALL features I could get in. Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (Israel)
Hi Rod

The new features are great - it surely do make the module much more useable, and for me it made the site much reacher. Thank You.
The minor twiks you might want to consider for this release are :
  1. When showing the quote, you should show which category it is from.
  2. In the grid view, there need to be another column with category.
Regarding next release, try to think if you can enter the option for entering "Today in History", which means that when entering the data you also enter a specific date (day, month and year), and the module will show randomally a specific enterd data from the current day.
An example is :
Date : 06/11/1844
Data : Today in 1844, the Dominican Republik is gaining independence from Spain.

So when a user enters the site on 06/11/2005, he will see one of the things that happend that day in history. (Randomly).

The categories I use now are : (Free translation from my language so I hope you will understand)
1. Idiom
2. Expression
3. Joke
4. Quote
5. Did you know ?
6. Personality, Like : Nerva (35-98 AC), the Ceaser of Rome between the years of 96 and 98 AC
7. Saying
8. Saying from the Bible
9. Thought
10. Verse

Lior

Modified By L L on 11/9/2005 11:38:26 PM)
Regarding the error with the User Profile, I don't know what to do. Sometimes it's ok and sometimes it shows an error.

The error is :
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at SmartThinker.DNN.Modules.UserProfile.UserProfile.LoadUserProfile(Int32 userID) at SmartThinker.DNN.Modules.UserProfile.UserProfile.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) --- End of inner exception stack trace

The link is:
http://www.pitgamim.co.il/Default.aspx?tabid=103&ID=6

I am logged in as host and trying to look at the profile of the user liorlustig.

Re: Quote Upgrade on Hold - Is it needed?  (United Kingdom)
Hi Lior

Glad you like it! Unfortunately this version is set in stone (unless major bugs come up) so I will make notes of your suggestions for the next version (point 1 and 2 make sense but I left them out due to time constaints - was supposed to be a small release ;)

Can you raise any requests (such as Today in History) on the Feedback Center so that other users can vote for them and I can guage their importance and priorize them accordingly? (I like this idea tho! It would be a setting I guess with Retrieve data from A) Today or B) This Data.... (within category, or all).

Have you added those categories using the Lists functionality? Are they all working fine?

ps. With regards to your UserProfile issue - please raise this in the UserProfile forums so that if people are searching for it they can find it.

Thanks
Rodney
