Uploading User Profile Images?  (United States)

Read all the docs, browsed through the code, didn't see anything that would allow an image for a user profile to be updated, added, or removed. Do you have any tips on this? Or is this a completely manual proces?

Thanks

RazrV3

Hi Jim

I was wondering how long it would take before this got noticed ;)

It is currently a manual process - it's in the Roadmap for the next version (or possibly after next - if I do a quick source code release) to be automated and available to the user on Edit Profile.

If you can't wait I can explain how to upload them manually? It basically uses a file/folder naming convention based on UserID

Thanks
Rodney

Rod, thanks for the post on the forum board, regarding my questions about the image uploads. I've got a quick suggestion. Being that the Gallery is now a core Module, would it make sense to leverage it to provide the Image Upload features? Seems like that would be a very quick and solid solution.

Yes, that is a good idea! I will make a note of it for a future version, so a user could link to their own gallery of whatever.

But I think you'd still want the single photo, or not? Or would this link to a particular photo in the gallery.

Thanks
Rodney

Hi there,

I would like to see the manual process for uploading profile pictures, if you don't mind.

Thanks!

Hello

To manually add a photo for a user you need to put each photo into this format :

PortalDir\Profiles\Initial\UserID\Profile1.jpg

So for example, my userID is 1, and my initital (for first name Rodney) would be "R", and I am in Portal 0, so I would put the photo in

Portals\0\Profiles\R\1\Profile1.jpg

This structure will not necessarily stay like this, but will be reviewed when user-photo uploading is worked on.

Photos should be optimally be 100 * 115

Let me know how you get on!

Re: Uploading User Profile Images?  (United States)
I'm glad you posted this here. I just subscribed to your service Monday 10/24/05. The reason I subscribed was because of this module and the great reviews it got. I've been disappointed so far with the choice to change over from PHP Nuke to DNN and I hoped this would change my mind. I kept being refered to your site since you seem to be the only one that has worked on a Customizable Member Profile and I was really hoping that this module was what I needed. It's fallen far short of our expectations and the roadmap thing was a ray of hope for us, but now I'm not so sure what to think. I understand you are busy so no problem there I'm just frustrated with the whole thing.

Re: Uploading User Profile Images?  (United Kingdom)
Hello

Sorry to hear it's not up to your expectations! I do know that PHP is a far more "mature" product than DNN, and there are only a handful of dedicated module developers in DNN currently (a lot of developers tend to disappear over night in some cases!)

This does mean that the range of modules is not as diverse and plentiful as for PHP - again - I have stretched myself a little thin and have too many modules (in an effort to make it a viable, sustainable income stream) - which means that I development cycles tend to be rather long. This means that I will probably only be able to implement the features on the User Profile module in a few months time - obviously this is not ideal though!

I'm quite happy to refund your money if you are not satisfied - unfortunately using the subscription model means I am constantly trying to expand my module portfolio in an effort to get customers, instead of being able to mature my existing products individually. I am considering if there is a better model somewhere in between to suit myself and my customers better, Of course, the majority of my subscribers use the modules "as-is", but I do get a couple of requests from subscribers who want a particular module to evolve to solve a certin business requirement (although it's usually the Event module).

Thanks for your feedback - I hope the rest of your DNN experience is a positive one - it's improving all the time and gaining pace...

Thanks

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Uploading User Profile Images?  (United States)

Hey Rod,

Thanks for the response. I don't want any money back and I think I can do a workaround for a few months to see where you take the module. I've got six months here and with what you have to offer now that's a fair deal. When you do updated it please keep me in mind and post something nice and flashy about it to get my attention.

One thing I would like to add as a request would be to code it so that you could optionally include a gallery module and possibly allow your blog module to be integrated. I would like to see it viewable by other registered or subscriber users and editable by the user and host/admin. I know that might take some time, but it would be worth waiting for.

Thanks again,

Trei

Hello Trei

Ok - I'll be sure to let you know when it's released!

Hmmm - with regards to your second requirement - I always see this kinda of stuff as outside of the scope of a particular module - would it not be easier to use something like the HomePage module so a user would have their profile, their blog and their galelry on (and the modules are unaware of each other?)

Thanks
Rodney

ЫщRe: Uploading User Profile Images?  (Thailand)

So ... the user actually can't add their own photo without admin's help ?

that's..... no good :^(

and this path to the users photo.... where I have to place the photo under the first letter of users name, my users are Russian... they have russian letters in their names... so it is not working out....

is there ( at least )  any way to change path to the profile photos at least to Portals/0/Users/**.jpg

where ** would be user ID ?

I hope the new module will be coming out where the users can upload their own photos... and I think not everyone needs to have Title... I feel very  strange beeng called "Mrs. StupidGirl"  the nickname or just name is ok without a title ...

censorship also should be optional.... not every site features some quotes or invitations that are hardcore ! :)

sooo.... I think that for User profile  some items should really be optional and so that Admin can set these items to be veiwed and filled in or hidden if not needed ...

thanks :^)

Re: Uploading User Profile Images?  (N/A)

Glad you got it working - I have updated the mistake.

"is there ( at least )  any way to change path to the profile photos at least to Portals/0/Users/**.jpg where ** would be user ID ?"

Yes, this is possible by customising the source - should only be a one line change.

I agree re. the "hardcore" comment - this can be changed though in the core Lists functionality to whatever you want. It's up to the modules whether they usethe censorship or not,  but yes, it would be nice if  it were optional. I'll consider this for the next version.

Thanks
Rodney
