Smart-Thinker DNN Forums

Forum Guidelines

Please ensure you follow the bug-raising guidelines (e.g. post the full error from your Event Viewer) if you are raising a support call. To request a feature in a module, please use Feature Requests (unless you want to discuss it here in more detail first). If you have an urgent feature that you would like to see in the product then you should consider a Sponsored Enhancement

First Time User? Make sure you have read the Module Config Guide in the documents folder of each module. Also check out this handy Module Deployment Guide (written by a Smart-Thinker customer!)

Configuration issues and no time to read the Forums/Documentation? See our DotNetNuke Premium Support Service. We need your opinion! Please read our proposed new CrowdSourcing development method and let us know if you would be interested and if it might work.

Commercial Branding and Vendors Visibility  (United Kingdom)

Hi rod

I think Ive discussed this with you via email but thought would carry the conversation through....

I have been planning to use 3/4 of your modules in a commercial solution

Ie. we would resell your modules to our clients. However, your identity is displayed throughout the module settings

eg. license and references to other vendors and other of your modules

Is this negotiable? Or could you sell a different version without it? or configure to remove it?

We want to sell DNN solutions but not verbosely advertise the fact - although if asked - we will confirm use of dnn.

Your approach makes this unviable.

Re: Commercial Branding and Vendors Visibility  (N/A)
Hello,

Out of interest, this is the first time I have had this request. If anyone else is reading this, can you please add your thoughts on this matter? I need to display whether the module is licensed or not, and there is no way to do this besides the module settings (ideally this would be at module level under Module Defs for the host only, but until then....)

When you say references to other modules, do you mean the "Integrate with Ventrian modules" etc? If so, then can you not just change the language string to be less specific?

I can't remove it as this saves me a lot of time in support calls when users have a trial version or they exceed the allowed portal limit and they have not applied the correct license key. Having said this, it should not be too hard to hide, you should just be able to edit the .acsx file - do you know how to do this? If not let me know and I can help you - it may be possible to make these fields invisible in the Module Settings.

One thing, when you say "resell" - what exactly do you mean please? (I need to make sure you are not breaching the Smart-Thinker license)

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Commercial Branding and Vendors Visibility  (United Kingdom)

we are putting together a suite of solutions eg. an intranet to sell to our client base

ie. we would sell solutions with a suite of modules from different vendors

must admit havent read your license in detail - but assumed would be no issue as long as you were paid for each installation
each time we sold a deployed a solution we would pay you the appropriate fee

you sell more - and we make a margin ontop for the installation, and configuration of the solution

is that a problem? do you have a different license for this scenario

thats why we wouldnt want to brand or expose all the vendors - we would deal with bugs and the relationship with the vendors

Hmm – to be honest I have not had my modules used in this “reseller” type of way.

I think that is a fair solution though, to pay for each client’s installation (we could discuss volume licensing at some point in the future if you were generating large numbers of sales.

Can you make a list of exactly what text you would not want to expose, and I will see how easy it is to remove. I can’t promise anything at the moment as this is the only request I have had for this, but there may be an easy way of satisfying this requirement with minimal effort.

I am aware of the “Smart-Thinker License Type” – for one – any others? Would it be ok if it just said “License Type” or something non-specific (if this is ok then language strings are easy to change through the DNN UI – it’s functionality that concerns me…

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Commercial Branding and Vendors Visibility  (United Kingdom)

re. licence setting

my suggestion would be to only make it visible to superuser account

I would think this would be a common sceanrio if reselling - that the reseller would hold back access from the client to the super user account

is that possible - ie. only display a module setting if superuser?

Re: Commercial Branding and Vendors Visibility  (United Kingdom)
Good idea! I will do this in the Referrals and UserGroup module I am about to release, and get it in for the next version of User Profile module.

This will be some way off so you will still need to tweak the language screens or .ascx files in the meantime. Let me know if anything else needs changing, as mentioned the branding was not intentional...

Thanks

Re: Commercial Branding and Vendors Visibility  (N/A)
Out of interest, I have used your suggestion on the UserGroup module released last week - it makes good sense and I will ensure all new versions only show the setting to the Host.

Thanks
