| MySpace/Social Network - Ideas for the UserProfile module (N/A) |
|
|
What do you want to see in the ST UP module? After coming to the conclusion that the HomePage module is NOT the best solution to conquer MySpace, I need some ideas for the future of profiles...
For example, MyFriends are coming soon, and a control to view which Groups a user belongs to, and which events they are going to, but what else is missing?
Did you know that you can put the UserProfile module on a page (set to PassedIn UserID) and then give out this URL as the UsersProfile (like you do on MySpace).
So this gave me an idea - possible a button or textbox that just exposed this link to make it more obvious eg. "My Profile Link xyz" OR possible a redirector control on the home page that the user can check to redirect them automatically to their profile page.
Let me know if you have any ideas - I can't promise anything but we can knock some ideas around... Thanks
Rodney

Rod,
Not to trow too much at you at one time, but... the client I am working with that is/was planning on using the HomePage module is basically looking for the following out of a "Profile/Home Page" module;
- Blog (like core blog module) - Pictures (Photo Gallery) - Text (like core Text/HTML module) - Friends (it sounds like you are already planning this) - Guestbook (just as the name implies)
This may be asking too much from the Profile module -- I'll leave that for you to decide. In reality, I may need to look at other options for this particular client.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Hi Chuck,
One of the reasons I did not like the HomePage module is that the user required knowledge of DNN and how roles/skins and basic DNN functions worked. This worked ok in an intranet, but there is no ways that a normal user would understand having admin rights on a page with no knowledge of DNN (the users on my site are blissfully unaware of the backend technology - but they do know what they like and they don't understand why it isn't like MySpace etc. ;)
Anyway - the other issue is that I don't like to reinvent the wheel - so for example, I would not rewrite or write a Blog module purely for the UP module, but the Blog module would need to be UserID aware.
For pictures, have you tried Personal Gallery by Bizmodules? I was going to look at this for PokerDIY. The Text module could be modified to store the UserID at record level (this is the problem - the backend databases do not store the UserID so no matter what you do you can't tell which content belongs to what user. It may be an idea just to make a small module view as part of the UserProfile that has a single textbox (and the Admin could add as many of these as they wanted to the profile page) and then the user could fill these in for different parts of their biography (or whatever).
This kindof highlights two things - the first one is having a static profile page (Admin defined) which the user populates, and all pages look the same. The second is giving the user control over their page (like the HomePage module did) but you have to make a simple UI that the user understands and hide all the complexity (and this is so far proving to be impossible with the DNN architecture).
I will be concentrating on the first one (I just want to state now that I have the Events and Groups module to work on too, so this is not going to be anytime soon) - these are long term ideas and I can't commit to anything at the moment.
My end vision is a profile page with the ST UP module on and then a whole lot of other modules that are user aware. I can't write new modules or do integration pieces, so it's up to the module developers to make their modules user-aware to allow this to work...
Thanks
Rodney

| Hi Rod and Chuck,
I too was planning use of Home Page with a client. Chuck if you find an alternative please keep us postes.
One question I have about the User Profile as I have just installed and started to tinker with it.... can I add/delete fields for the user to complete? I'll be digging in a litter more today and checking out the help.
Rod, for me, the Friends thing will be HUGE!!!! Is that a short term or longer term delivery?
Thanks for all your good work.

Hi JA,
Can you raise any specific queries on a separate thread please so as not to clog this up - The MyFriends is a short term (1 week) hopefully - it will be a phased approach - I think there is a pinned post regarding the requirements around it if you want to have your say.
Thanks

Out of interest, there is another UserProfile module in the market - DNNFusion's MyProfile module. From what I can see he has gone down the route of making special modules to work in his profile module. I have not yet had a proper look but it looks good and it might help some of you. I will also look at options to integrate my templates with his module - it may be easier than I thought.
I have also setup profiles on PokerDIY to be more "MySpacy" - you can see my profile here... I wanted to demonstrate how powerful the custom templating on the ST UserProfile module was.
Thanks

I am now dogfooding "MyFriends" on PokerDIY
- feel free to make an account and add me as a friend to see how it
works. I should be able to release it later today. Have a look at my profile to see an example...
This includes the first 2 phases....
Thanks

Dear All,
today i just want to add my two pence to this discussion. It should be from the users and programmers point of view.
Started with DNN 1 year ago, today i got a lot of expierences of the pros and cons.
i am currently using it on 10 portals and one community portal.
i purchased a lot of Moduls. mainly from smart-think, ventrian and dnnfusion, activemoduls to have a community, like it is existing on millions of websites.
Rods moduls currently give the main parts, like profile, group, events, birthday. Unfortunetly the homepage modul left. But was the right decision from my point of view.
So waht is everbody doing if he wants to have beside the smart-thinker fucntionality? He buys moduls fromlet me say dnnfusion, which gives a user homepage (titled profil).
So and now there is the major pain. dnn and even ventrian are implementing there own profil modul. You don`t need to use it, but if you want to build up the community, than you have to.
Means a user at my side, has to input there birthday a minimum 2 times and upload their photo three times, so it exist in all part of HIS community.
From the programmer point of view, i ask myself, why are all reinventing the wheel and not sit together at a table and see the ressources and try to develop interfaces between the moduls from different vendor. You know at all, you have your specialization. Dnnfusion has a good Homepage modul, Scot is doing more news and gallery things, and rod of course is doing the whole - let me say listing things.
So for us users it is a pain in the a**, to modify the ascx files, transfer toklens through the querystring or even customize the source - with recompiling everytime there is a update.
Today the only possiblibility is to pass the userid between them, but that doesn'T help, to switch of redunadant data typing of the user. Its not really frindly to ask him again and agin...what was your birthday, a what was it again :-)
Don't get me wrong, all the work is good and you are all giving best support, but it is a matter of let the community grow and make life easier for users...
curerntly i am strting the development. Maybe my first project should be a modul, whihc is responsile for sharing informations between the modules of all vendors :-) (Normally a thing the core should do)
Best regards
Marc |

Rodney your stuff rocks and has allowed me to do a great deal more efficiently and timely than I could have thought.
Except now I got users who are getting spoiled by the enhancements/customizations I've done and are screaming for a way to messages to each other on each others profiles like on that da** myspace...
If I could get to that point it would be awesome. Thanks! |

Out of interest, I have integrated Ultra Media Gallery 5 with the Smart-Thinker UserProfile module on PokerDIY. The UMG UserGuide actually uses the Smart-Thinker UserProfile module as an example of how to show the pics for a certain user, and it's very easy to set up.
This is the main poker gallery, which anyone can submit pics to (with an approval phase on PokerDIY). If you look at a particular user's profile you will see just the pics that they have submitted to the Gallery. I really like the UMG module and the developer offers great support (please note that I am not getting paid to say this (unless you buy it through the Snow link above) ;) It's good to see high quality DNN modules and I recommend this product as the preferred gallery solution for integration with the Smart-Thinker Product Suite. Thanks

Is it possible to have a user-based blog? For example, every user could have their own blog on their Profile page...

This would be a great addition, but it is not currently possible. Hopefully at some point the core blog module would allow this (in the same way you can drop Ultra Media Gallery on to profile pages) but the blog module would need to be restuctured to allow this... Thanks

Rodney-
Thanks for the great support. I have been fumbling my way around DNN all this week. Your products are incredible, but there are so many possibilities its hard to get my footing.
BTW, i am unable to start new threads on ST forums, i keep getting Error: Add/edit post is currently unavailable. Here is the URL:http://www.smart-thinker.com/Support/Forums/tabid/111/ctl/PostEdit/forumid/11/action/new/mid/546/Default.aspx

I have one other suggestion that would make my life *immensley* easier. On the UserProfile modules, if no passed-in ID is passed-in, i would want the module to display currently logged-in user info. Sort of like falling-back on the logged in user instead of displaying "there was a problem loading this module..."
My reasoning is like the Facebook site, where the same page is reused for viewing your own profile as well as other users.
I tried adding another menu option called "My Profile" and pointing to the UserProfile page, but I couldn't get that to succeed.
Thanks |

Crap! You make two pages " User Profile" and " My Profile". Install userprofile module on both the pages. On user profile page set the module to show passed in ID and on my profile set it up to show logged in member. Wow! I was so frustrated with this module. I like it now. Now to work on create the group. This is making my hair turn grey! Rodney any help? 6 months ago I did not know how HTML was spelled. |

You can almost do that to every useprofile module. Insert all the modules on two pages. Home page and user profile page. Home page is user default page. All modules on the home page should be set up to show logged on user and all the modules on the user profile page should be set up to passed in user id. Also members should not have direct access to the user profile page. Wow, this is my 2 nd day into this. I really hope Rodeny can come up with good forum/ mygallery/ mymedia/edit profile intergration. I am willing to chip in if someone else is also interested! 6 months ago I did not know how HTML was spelled. |

That was the only work-around i could think of: having two separate pages. One with "pass-in id" and one with ""logged-in id".
But i have several modules on that Profile page and i want to avoid maintaining duplicate pages if possible. |

There is no need for the useprofile friends request module to be on the user profile page. It can be on my page with the inbox, if you are using ventrian pvt message. Also, I am noticing that ST referrals and friend request cannot be one page! I hope Rodeny fixes it because I am planning to have the referrals on my page, gonna use the aggregator from dnnstuff. I am not using it right now but hope it works with the aggregator. 6 months ago I did not know how HTML was spelled. |

I am also having problems displaying wall on user profile and my page. I wonder why? Rodeny can it be done? Display my wall on my page? I can see the wall on user profil for my account if I go through the directory. Am I making any sense? 6 months ago I did not know how HTML was spelled. |
