Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)
Hello,

The GroupCategory uses the core Lists functionality, which is accessible from Hosts\Lists. You can add or edit the categories to suit your site.

This will actually highlight a limitation in the DNN Core Lists implementation - if you have multiple sites on an install you may want different data/categories depending on the type of portal, hence for well over a year I have been asking the core to move Lists to Site level and not Host Level (or have both would be good too - some lists ARE static - like Country). Another limitations of Lists is that they are not localizable - again, this is a core limitation (non-static localization is on the roadmap apparently).

I chose to use Lists as it is a standard interface and a lot easier than rewriting this functionality (most Smart-Thinker modules have 1 list or more).

I'll add this into the Module Config Guide I am working on today!

Thanks
Rodney

Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)

Hi,

Great module!

I assume empty categories (DNN List entries that don't contain any groups) will not show up on this page?

I fully agee with the "why re-invent the wheel" issue, but considering Portal Lists haven't been implemented yet, and the limitation this causes in multi-portal installs, you still haven't considered re-inventing the wheel? ;-)

Thanks,

rudgr

Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)

Hi rudgr,

Thanks!

Well, this is the funny thing - I can see in the core now that PortalID has been introduced into the Lists table (this broke some stuff a while ago). This would imply that they are gearing up for it soon - I am still trying to get a conclusive answer on the core forums as to what happened with this feature and how to use it (it was in the release notes). Do you know for sure that it is not working in the latest core DNN version?

Thanks
Rodney

Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)

Hey I tried to add a list under the smartthinker-usergroups list via host->lists

I was trying to see if I could make subcategories per category for example, listing states as categories under a parent category.

Anyhow, this didnt work and I'm trying to delete that child list and I keep just getting an error. That's a DNN Core thing correct? Would it hurt anything if I just renamed it? It shows up in the categories options as a parent list, but the list items as children dont display.

Any suggestions? Cheers!

Re: User Group Categories  (Australia)

Hi,

This module does not support child lists (the UI would need to be changed to allow nesting).

With the core error - I thought I read something about that on the core forums - it was a bug in 4.6.1 or something that will be fixed in the next version. I am trying to get someone to answer my question about portal lists so at least the Smart-Thinker modules can have different lists on different portals.

Thanks
Rodney

Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)

I am using the latest version of DNN and have installed the groups module. I have set this up and created a group. Nothing shows in the UserGroup module. I have modified the categories via host/lists and they display while creating the group. Still nothing on the main module tab, not even the categories. I can click to view all groups and the group will display. I am assuming this is the categories not displaying.

Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)

Are you sure you have assigned any categories to any groups (it does not show empty categories)?

Thanks

Re: User Group Categories  (N/A)

Ok, can you answer the following:

  1. Are there any errors in the event log when this happens
  2. Who are you logged in as
  3. Are the groups public
  4. Does the group have the category assigned
  5. Do they appear when you switch to the Country view?

Thanks
