Add Group  (United States)
Modified By Ezra Klug on 3/7/2008 12:10:20 PM)

DNN: 4.8.1
ST UserGroups: 4.3.5
ST Events: 4.3.7

I believe I've followed the instructions correctly. I have marked a Role to have Edit rights on the Groups module but when I login as a user in that Role the "Create Group" link is not there. I only see the link when I login as Admin or Host.

I have the same issue with Events.

Re: Add Group  (Australia)

Can you go through this thread and ensure you have tried everything please:

http://www.smart-thinker.com/Support/Forums/tabid/111/forumid/26/threadid/3788/scope/posts/threadpage/3/Default.aspx

At the bottom of it is a bug I found in the core and a solution too, but it may be a simpler issue than that mentioned earlier in the thread.

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Add Group  (United States)

I got to page 9 of that thread and realized what was going on.

I had Control Panel Mode set to View and Control Panel Security set to Page Editor. So there was no way for any Registered User to go into Edit mode which your modules require.

After setting the default Control Panel Mode to Edit, the Add Event and Add Group links appeared for Registered Users or any user in the Role I assigned Edit rights to the Modules.

I normally agree with your view of not reinventing the wheel, but when it comes to "Add" rights in modules I do feel a way to control that as part of the module itself and separate from DNN works better some times.

I have not run across any issues yet, but I know that putting the page into Edit can display options in other modules that you don't want Regular users to see. I've used modules that I've had that issue with in the past...granted I no longer use those modules.

Just my two cents.

But all is working now. Thank you for the great modules!

Agreed- but there is some big confusion around this issue - I feel that it is those modules that display the wrong information in Edit mode that are at fault. Basically the module is designed to show the logged on user the Edit Content (in this case, Add Group) link IF they have edit rights on the module. BUT then some versions ago some big wig decided that the Page should have this extra View mode (Edit was the default) - to show only the content. It's purpose is to strip away clutter - it should be used when getting an over view of the page -  I personally never have used the View mode, and it is a real pain - my users never see it. I think the introduction of this "featured" has wasted a lot of time and caused a lot of confusion.

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Add Group  (United States)

Never looked at it in the way that it was the other modules doing it wrong

I understand your points and as I use DNN versions above 4.3.5, I'm agreeing with you more and more about the Page View mode.
