Multiple Portal Support  (N/A)
Modified By Postrooms on 7/15/2008 4:44:44 AM)

We are building a site that will have 60 parent portals. We are looking into a mod that will allow our users too login to the main site and have access to all the portals.

We are wondering if a user makes a profile on our main site, can they create a group on another portal and still link it back to their main profile page?

We were also wondering the same if we link the profile to a DNN forum on another portal?

Has anyone tried this yet?

Thank you,

Sean

Re: Multiple Portal Support  (N/A)

Hello Sean,

No, the ST modules do not work across portals I'm afraid. When you say you want to link a profile to a forum - what do you mean? How do you want to link it? If it is a normal a href then it should link fine?

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Multiple Portal Support  (N/A)

Rodney,

We were hoping to build a large site that had one topic per parent portal. We were hoping to use your profile mod...to allow users to register at the main site, create a profile and interact with our main site content. (articles, forums, etc.) Then they could jump over to their prospective portal and create groups by thier location and post in a seperate forum.

I don't know how we are going to be able to make this work now. Having everything on the main site would be very messy, especialy with 60 portals of content!

When I said link to the forums, I was refering to how you have it set up on PorkerDIY.

Any plans to offer multiple portal suport?

Also any plans in the near future to change the profile links to www.mysite.com/username? We think our concept will work easier..if people can easily promate themselves.

Thanks again,

Sean

Re: Multiple Portal Support  (United States)

Have you considered using one of those multi portal modules? They basically duplicate user data across different portals. You would have to install ST on all the portals you would want this to happen. But, it's possible.

Hello Sean,

Linking from the Forums to the profile is easy to do with PageBlaster. You can read more on the DNN Dev blog here.

This is the first request I have ever had to make the modules work across portals I'm afraid. For this reason you may need to customize the code to meet your requirements. You could raise a Feature Request to see how popular it is, but I have not had any requirements like this before .Every data call would need to be changed to ignore portal and every screen would need a setting - it's no small task.

The UserName change is on my list - it would require a look up page to intercept call and resolve the UserName (although I would prefer to use DisplayName as I think UserName should never be visible) to the UserID. This is an additioanl hit/redirect per request. I need to think about it some more... I started this thread on the PageBlaster forums a while ago.

Thanks
Rodney

Coolvibe,

Do you have any samples? Are you refering to this mod?

Rodney,

www.mysite.com/username

We are launching a HUGE social networking site and we have been looking at profile mods for this project and another one, we are currently working on getting funding for. Both of your competitors are adding this feature in the next month or so. Can you share with me your thought process? Are you really considering this? We need to choose a vendor and are leaning towards your modules, but a simplified profile link is an absolute must! This is how our customer will be advertising their spaces.

Thanks,

Sean

Yes, I am definitely looking at this (I require it on PokerDIY.com which is a driving factor for me too). Check out the URL I posted above on Snapsis - there are some problems that need to be solved first - one is that the DisplayName is not unique (I posted on the core about this) and 2 is that there is a performance overhead with using the Displayname as it will need to do a lookup to resolve it to a UserID first.

Thanks
Rodney
