local site to hosted site - who to host with?  (United Kingdom)
Hi I have been building my website on my local pc, I'm now getting to the stage that I want to make it live and host it with a company, I have a couple of questions about this. I'm sure there must be detailed information somewhere on how to transfer the site from a local machine to a hosted location. Can anyone say if this is easy to do, recommend any resource links etc? Secondly the host, Rod I see you use Powerdnn, which I have read several good reviews about. When you a hosting package, is it easy to upgrade to a more pro package if demand requires it? Can anyone else recommend any other hosts maybe slightly cheaper priced for a starting point? Thanks Dan

Re: local site to hosted site - who to host with?  (N/A)
Hi Dan,

PowerDNN are really good - Tony is avery hands-on kinda guy - he takes a very active interest in your site and handles all the hard work for you. He can easily upgrade you if required (with minimal downtime). All you need to do is send him a zip of your portal files and a backup of your DB and he does the rest.

I would NOT use WebHost4Life unless it is a test server and speed and reliabilty are not requirements (for their cheap package that is).

These are the only two I have had experiences with...

Thanks
Rodney

Re: local site to hosted site - who to host with?  (N/A)

Thanks Rod, I will check them out.

One final note, what slows DNN down? is it just the host providers services? how complex the website build is? or the number of members online at the same time etc?  Do you know what the max number of members DNN can handle whilst running at a good level?

Cheers

Dan

Re: local site to hosted site - who to host with?  (N/A)
The Host definitely is one of the most important factors - a slow host is going to slow down even the most finely-tuned DNN install.

The number of Scheduled Tasks running also plays a big role - I went through each one and dropped it down to a realistic figure so they run only when needed.

The number of tabs and users also affect performance - but I beleive that DNN 4.4.0 addresses a lot of the caching issues around tab management so hang tight until this new version is realeased as it is a performance update.

I don't know how many users it can handle but DotNetNuke.com is a good example...

Thanks

Re: local site to hosted site - who to host with?  (N/A)
The Scheduled Tasks are the items that run every x minutes to clean up resources etc. under the Host menu \ Scheduler. The defaults may be too optimistic and you should go through each scheduled item and optimize it.

Tabs = pages ;) I think that's their old name but the code uses tabs but I think they should be referred to as pages.

Thanks
