Users, Capacity and Speeds  (United Kingdom)

Hi Rod,

I wonder if you could help me…

We’re looking at creating a portal with anything up to 120,000 users.  I have created a mock-up portal with just 12,000 users and any module that use User data now run very, very slowly. For example, with 15 users, search times were approx 5 seconds, with 12000 users, they take around 1 minute.

Is there any way I can speed this up?  We have super fast broadband so I know it's not related to that.   So, I can only presume it is related to one of the following: hosting, DNN, Setup or the modules.  Do you have any ideas?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Anna

Re: Users, Capacity and Speeds  (N/A)
Hi Anna,

The biggest portal I have used has 5000 users, and that is Smart-Thinker. It is running on DNN 3.2.0 which is a very old version. I think the speed is pretty average, but there are lots of modules that will not handle more than xxxxx records due to the use of dropdown lists etc.

When you say "User data" do you mean normal core profiles with extended data? What version of DNN are you running, and how many portals, and how what server/host are you using?

Bear in mind that the DNN mothership has 300k+ users and it seems to handle ok (if you ignore the odd Forum-related error!) so 15 000 should be handled with ease. 3rd Party modules will of course need to be analysed on an individual basis as the majority of modules were designed for small portals and not intended for Enterprise use (including Smart-Thinker modules which were originally created for a single portal with a small community (child portals did not even exist!) - this is something I am working on for my own modules)

Apparently the new DNN 4.4.0 version has a lot of long-overdue performance enhancements which will hopefully fix these types of issues. It could be any number of factors - I would also recommend posting this on the Configure It Forum on the DNN main forums to try and get some tips from other large site users.

Are you using HTTP compression and DNN Caching?

Thanks
Rodney

Re: Users, Capacity and Speeds  (United Kingdom)

Hi Rod,

Thanks for the speedy response.

Yes I do mean core data with extended data.  We are running on 4.03.05 on Power DNN (like yourself I believe!).

We dont use DNN caching and I'm not sure what HTTP compression is, so I guess not?!

Thanks,

Anna

Re: Users, Capacity and Speeds  (N/A)
Hi Anna,

By DNN Caching, I meant the caching options under Host Settings - DNN runs very slowly without this caching on.

With HTTP Compression, each packet of information is compressed before being sent down to the browser, and then decompressed, so download speeds are increased.

Ben Lowery did a HTTP Compression project, but I think I read that it is being incorporated into the new DNN 4.4.0 by default to help performance.

Thanks
Rodney
