"Professional" version of Events Module  (United States)

Rodney, would you consider making a more professional version of the events module.

Something that would address a more business-like environment. Exact time references instead of approximate. A start and an end time vs a "duration".

Customizable drop downs for attire, categories etc.

Thanks,

Jack

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United Kingdom)
Hmmm - this is an interesting idea and one that I have been asked on before!
Well - the duration - start and stop is actually a feature I am adding in a later version (I even got as far as putting EventStart and End in the Event table for this release. Then I will drop the duration field - it is not as accurate as your proposal.

With regards to the dropdowns - all data is stored in the Lists table, so it could be customized to be more professional (just don't change the values).

However I could release an AddOn pack (SQL script) that effecitvely "corporitizes" the data - and replaces it with more business-related data - perhaps when we both have a moment we could work out what should be included?

Thanks

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United States)

Is there any reason why you could not populate the drop downs from an XML file? The reson being each instance may need to be specific and it may need to be specific per portal, not installation.

Events can be a very personalized thing for each organization and sharing all of the possibilites across portals will really clutter things up.

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United Kingdom)
About a month ago I moved all lists and common data into the Lists core functionality - this eliminated a LOT for DAL code and database SQL, as you can imaging (I have about 10 lists)...

I have raised this several times with the core team and I believe it is a flaw that will be resolved one day - hence I don't want to spend too much time on it working around it: I asked the core team to move Lists to portal level, not just host, and they will be localized as part of the non-static data localization drive (which should be happening soon, considering it is fundamental to a multi-cultural DNN).

I therefore can't justify the time it would take to workaround this limitation, but I do agree that there is a strong requirement - perhaps the best position to take would be to backup the requests in Gemini?

Thanks

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (Canada)

I just wanted to concur that a more professionalized version of this module would be a great asset.

Being able to customize the events per portal is also very attractive.  For example a sports club (kids baseball schedule), a charity golf event, a physiotherapy session and a corporate meeting would all have very different, and specific, requirements.

... just a thought

Once the user has RSVPed, would there be any way in the email notification/confirmation to allow the user to automatically import it into their Outlook Calendar?

Hmmm - thats a nice idea - I'm going to look at exporting to Outlook in a later version.

Rod,

I know this is off-topic, but can you think of any reason why I don't receive email notification when this thread is updated?   I have Notification checked off.

Sorry for putting this here, pPlease feel free to delete this post.

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (Canada)

As per our direct emails, this seems to be a WH4L problem.  I've sent them a detailed message describing the problem.  However, I don't expect a quick resolution to it :(

I'll post their answer/solution here when it's resolved.

Rod,

Here's what WH4L has said and done for this issue.  It should be resolved as soon as all their internal DNS servers propigate the information to one another.

smsolutions.com domain is getting alot of local bounce back error messages. this domain is hosted on a different dns server. local zone file on webhost4life dns server has been deleted for this domain. so user should not be getting anymore bounce backs from us.

Elapsed time = 104 days ;)

I'll attempt the change on my mailserver settings and see if that helps!

This is an issue that has been rearing it's ugly head for a while.  I never close it, 'cause they never fix it.  I would expect to see this # still rise :(

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United States)

Rodney, is there anything in the works for a "Pro" version. Right now the module is just way too "loose" for it to be of use for me. It's needs to be much leaner for business or organizational use. Right now I view it as a "personal" application for a night out etc.

All you really need is.....

  • Title
  • Date
  • Details
  • Location
  • RSVP or "Registration"
  • "Options" or session selection.

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United States)
I'm in the same boat.  I've got a client that needs to schedule workshops.  The Events Module is close to being a perfect application.  Here is what is missing for my client:

  • Start and Stop times, duration does not work
  • The ability to have multi-day events
  • The straight forward list that jhoetz provides above would be better for me.  I think Dress Code could be simply mentioned as part of the details if appropriate.  Or, allow a "not selected" item in the drop down.  This option would keep any mention of Dress Code from appearing on any of the output pages altogether.  Currently when None is selected as Dress Code, the text "Dress Code" still appears on the output pages.  My client finds this a bit embarassing.
  • The ability to "select all" or "deselect all" when dealing with large email lists.
Finally, I'd appeciate some idea of if these features might make it in the next release and when that might be.

Thanks,
Wylie

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United Kingdom)
I see where you are coming from, but I don't want to remove fields. I guess a nice solution might be to have a checkbox against each field for Display or Mandatory, and the form gets built up dynamically, but then I am moving into Form module territory.

This is actually something I have been thinking about for a while for all module - I want to be able to attach FormFields to ANY module - so against a RSVP you'd have RSVP FormField types that they might need to fill in - eg. a drop down list or textbox. I need to spec this out so it is generic and can be used by all my other modules (for example - the User Profile - Admin could create a Numeric field for their shoe size or whatever)

Bear in mind that the lists are using standard functionality and are designed to be customized - I'm not too keen on maintaining 2 codebases for this module but someone could write a SQL script to update the List values to be more "professional" or provide an add-on language pack to change the screen field names. I would like to do this but time is the main prob!

Perhaps if you could identify the values you would like in each list I could create an Update script and provide it as an alternate download?

Thanks
Rodney

Ok - the Duration list doesn't seem to be popular - I will add this onto the Roadmap but it wont make the next version I'm afraid!

By multi-day events I presume you mean Recurring events? This is scheduled for a later version but I need to do some brainstorming on it.

Re: DressCode: Yes, good point - perhaps a simple list change to "Not Relevant" would suffice, but I see the problem.

Email lists - I've got big plans for this - the ability to select all and also much better sorting and searching on users.

Unfortunately a lot of these wont be in the next release, but I hope to get the next version of the Events module out in the next month. I want to continue work on the HomePage module and then will focus on the Events module.

Thanks

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United States)
Thanks for the response Rodney.

I think you're idea of placing "not relevant" in several of the drop downs is great.  If this item was chosen then you could simply set the "dress code" label to visible=false.

Your ideas on the email list handling will make a big difference when you've got a lot of addresses.  I can appreciate how much work this could take on your part.

Any guess when you might get a version out with Start and Stop times?

Recurring events will also be a nice feature.  Bookable Events allows this:
http://www.snowcovered.com/snowcovered2/Default.aspx?tabid=166&CatalogItemID=1801&CatalogID=7&search=events&pagenumber=0&sortby=

I've also seen a module that imports and exports to Outlook.

For my client multi-day events means that they have an event that goes from Friday 6-9 pm, Saturday from 9am - 6 pm and Sunday 9am - 6 pm.  I'm not certain how you would show this as a single event.

Thanks and keep me posted.

Wylie

Re: "Professional" version of Events Module  (United States)
Boy, do I ever agree with the need for this to be more business oriented.  In a business environment we cannot give Host or site Administrative rights to the person who manages events.  Ther also needs to be more flexibility for the field names and values.  The issue of needing Host rights to apprave an event is a show stopper for us. Is there anyway to have a quick fix on this issue.  For now, at least permit the Administrator to approve.  Thank,  Bill G2 Ideas

All fields and values can be customized by modifying the List values or Resource files. The shipped values are there as a guide only. Let me know if you need help with customizations.

The next version (out in September) will allow the selection of a Role to handle Event approvals and admin. There are a lot of features planned for this release so please keep feeding back.

If you would like to modify the source to allow Admin to approve I could point you in the right direction?

Thanks
